Google+ has become one of my favorite social networks, and certainly is among the few that I visit daily without fail. Twitter remains at the top of the list for me but Google+ is a close second. It also has superb mobile apps, which are a must if you are a regular Google+ user, and even more valuable if you are an Always Addressable Customer, like me.
Scott Bradley wrote a very useful blog post entitled “How To Get More Followers On Google Plus” on July 15, 2011, and I still think it is very relevant over a year later. However, I have added two more to his original list of six suggestions, and modified the wording a little bit on one or two of them. I also enlisted Lady GaGa to add her own style to this update on the six suggestions from Scott Bradley. Do not miss the video! so here are the 8 steps to get more followers on Google+..
1 – Invite people from your other social media networks to Google+.
Could be more successful if you try this using your Twitter, Pinterest or LinkedIn connections compared to your family and friends on Facebook.
2 – Engage strategically on people’s content.
“Strategically” is the key word here. Try and spot well connected user who share the same topic interests with you.
3 – Direct comments to people in the Google+ posts shared by those you circled.
Those Google+ people are likely to share the same interests as you, and will value your engagement. Do not just add throw away comments. ENGAGE!
4 – Add a +1 to comments that you think add value to the conversation.
I do this as much as I can. It shows that I have read their comments and appreciate their input.
5 – Place your Google+ profile link strategically within your blog, Facebook page, YouTube, Twitter, etc
This is good advice for any Social media network that you value.

6 – Share high quality content with your “Extended Circles” in Google+.
I have been sharing with my Extended circles since I started in Google+. Your extended circles include people in your circles’ circles. I have found many valuable contacts when I used the Google+ “generate suggestions” of people that I may want to get to know and follow, as your extended circles are used to help create that list.
7 – Use Google+ notifications to make others aware of your posts.
This is the first of my two additions to Scott’s original 6. Google+ has just rolled out a feature which is the ability to put people into circles and then adjust its setting so that you will get a notification (numerical indication within the small red box in the top right hand corner of the online version) every time they post. Obviously, you’re only going to be able to put a few people into those circles before your notification box becomes completely full and will then show the 99+ value. This takes time to fine tune. I had the 99+ notification value many times before I achieved the right mix. Note that at this present time, you will also get an email notification, which is annoying to many to get the notification twice. I would have liked to have been able to set my choice of the two notifications. I have set up an email rule to deal with the duplicate email notifications as I prefer the Google+ red notification system within Google+.
The key is to be “notification worthy”. Maybe create a circle of people that you would like to receive your top posts, and include them when you post, in addition to the choices of say “Public” and “Extended circles”. However, be careful not to abuse this, otherwise people will mute your posts.
8 – Make great quality content in public posts.
Public posts can appear outside of the circulation of your circles and thus show up in the search engine results. This gives you extra visibility. Klout also uses your public Google+ posts to make it’s valuation of your influence score, among many other things.
Your posts need to be interesting and valuable enough for others to +1 and share them. These actions will help to make your content appear higher in Google’s search results. Read more about this here.
Try and create a fair percentage of public posts, that are not specifically tuned for a small group in a circle. They should be worded so that a large general audience would be able to read them comfortably. They should add value to a larger audience should they appear in a search engine results page. Tag the posts well.
I did not include that having good visibility and contributing to well chosen Google Hangouts will increase the probability of acquiring new followers. I also did not add that being included in circles that are shared (“Shared circles”) will also result in a huge boost to your follower numbers. This is because you cannot directly effect this, but indirectly you can by adding value when you regularly post interesting and “must read” posts! You will eventually appear in a shared circle at sometime which will hopefully get passed around, and adopted by many!
