GooglePlus Ripple diagrams allow you to see who is sharing and resharing your posts. This lets you discover influencers and track how their connections react to your content.
I spend a lot of my daily social media time in Google+. Using the ripples feature is just one of those tools that can provide great insights. Besides my own profile page, I co-mange the Philips business page on Google+.
I have created blog posts in the past with tips about how to be circled more, the introduction of Google+ communities, and how to take advantage of the the connection with Google search. OK, so let’s dive headfirst into an introduction of Googleplus Ripple diagrams.
GooglePlus Ripple diagrams
- Ripple diagrams are only available after a post has been publicly re-shared.
- Arrows on the Ripple diagram indicate the direction of resharing.
- Ripple diagrams are interactive, so you can zoom in and move around.
- Ripples only show activity over the past 53 days.
- Share Ripple diagrams by copying the URL of the page.
Here is the Ripple for THIS BLOG POST, created after this post was shared in the social media strategy community in Google+ on Saturday 13th July 2013. Here you see it after 6 public shares within the first few hours on the day it was posted:
And here is the same ripple after 8 public shares. Notice Bill Douglas’s circle has increased in size to show greater influence as his sharing has led to others sharing, so his circle increased in size;
Circles of influence
- Circles within circles indicate a resharing sequence.
- Large circles indicate heavy resharing, “circles of relative influence”.
- Learn more about influencers by hovering over the names and view any reshare comments.
- Create Circles from the influencers in your target area on your profile or company page, establish relationships, and offer incentives.
Analysis
- The languages used in the public shares are indicated by a pie chart.
- “Reshares over time” can play an animation of when the shares occurred.
- The influencers section lists the top people with many public reshares of the post.
- Chain Statistics include “Average chain length”, “Longest chain” and “shares/hour”.
- Subtract the number of public shares from the total to find the number of private shares.
I made this infographic as a handy takeaway of these important points:
