Voice Assistants – The Complete Guide
Talking to yourself? That’s so 2016. Talking to a personal assistant? That’s the way to move forward and boost your connectivity, productivity, and tech skills. In fact, digital personal assistants, as items like Google Echo and Amazon Alexa, are known can type fast and think in more complex ways than you imagined, which means they can help you stay on top of to-do lists and deadlines, too.
Voice Search And Social Posting
A growing use of digital voice assistants is for searching. Research by StoneTemple found that people tend to use voice search the most while at home alone or at home with friends, or alone at work. 13% of smartphone users feel comfortable using voice commands in a public restroom.
A change in iOS 11 has made it impossible to do social media posting using Siri to Twitter and Facebook. This is because Twitter and Facebook are no longer integrated in iOS 11. Previous versions of Apple’s iPhone and iPad operating system integrated single sign-on Facebook and Twitter into the system. In iOS 11, they’re back to being extensions.
There are many applets on IFTTT that can be used with Google Assistant to post on social media. Some platforms are smoother than others. Sometimes more than 10 to 20 words can results in a search query for say “post to LinkedIn” instead of an actual LinkedIn post but things will get better.
Smart Watch and Siri
I regularly use Siri on my Apple watch to find out the latest news, football scores, and also to do calculations. My favorite task is to change the lighting throughout my home with Siri on my smart watch, using Apple Homekit integration to the Philips Hue. I have a lot of fun with that.
Personal Digital Assistants
Personal digital assistants work by taking commands from your voice and translating them into tasks such as recording notes or posting on a social media platform. How old you are probably determines what you use your personal assistant for. Baby boomers, for example, may use them more often to check a calendar event, while millennials rely on a personal assistant to play an individualized music list. Nearly every major tech company has a personal digital assistant of some sort; this graphic helps you figure out what you can do with them and how they stack up.
